LA Galaxy Defeat the Houston Dynamo 1-0; Win MLS Cup Behind Donovan Goal

CARSON, CA - NOVEMBER 20: Landon Donovan #10 and David Beckham #23 of the Los Angeles Galaxy celebrate after defeating the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in the 2011 MLS Cup at The Home Depot Center on November 20, 2011 in Carson, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

In a match in which the LA Galaxy dominated much of the play, it wasn't until the 72nd minute that Landon Donovan was able to finally break the deadlock with the Houston Dynamo. Donovan's goal from a Robbie Keane pass would be all LA would need to claim the club's third MLS Cup title.

LA was the better team pretty much from the get-go, but they failed to capitalize on a number of good scoring opportunities. Forward Adam Cristman, playing in place of the injured Chad Barrett, was responsible for a few of the Galaxy misfires early on.

Keane and forward Mike Magee were also guilty of not converting chances they probably should have as well, but at the end of the day Donovan's finish was enough to pull LA ahead for good. It was beyond obvious that Houston missed their play maker, Brad Davis.

Donovan was named the MLS Cup MVP, although I believe a case could be made for either Keane or midfielder David Beckham as well.

Winning the championship may very well prove to be the perfect way for Beckham to end his time in Major League Soccer. My feeling about the situation is that we just saw Beckham play his last game in MLS.

And thus, the end of another MLS season is here, and now the true off season begins.

Certainily is was a great year for Major League Soccer, as the league broke attendance records, and the best team in MLS actually won the MLS Cup.
