"Sporting KC": It's Almost Here

Goodbye, old friend.
Goodbye, old friend.

It seems as if the franchise known as the Kansas City Wizards will be known as such for about another 120 hours, give or take a few.

According to a Facebook event invite just received by anybody and everybody associated with the club, from media to bloggers to team employees to just plain old fans, what is being dubbed as "Major Kansas City Soccer Announcement" is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. this coming Wednesday evening, November 17th. That just so happens to be the day that Teal Bunbury will make his first appearance for the United States national team. That's neither here nor there, though, as we've beat that horse to death fairly well already.

Not much is to be said about the event itself, because well, this has been about as terribly kept of a secret as Thierry Henry to New York Red Bulls was. It's long been known that the ownership group OnGoal was looking to rebrand, and that Sporting KC had become the front runner for the new name.

I will surely be down at Power&Light that evening for the big announcement, followed by pub crawl around P&L. Hell, I'll be there at 1 p.m. for the US friendly; I may just stay there and drink all day. Hopefully the team decides to pick up the tab for the pub crawl, because early responses from fans are that they are not on board with Sporting KC.

Either way, it's great that the team feels as if they can put on an "event" like this and people are interested enough to show for it. So, hopefully I'll see you all downtown Wednesday night. It's sure to be a good time had by all.
