Sporting KC Trades for San Jose Defender Ike Opara

Defender Ike Opara is the latest player headed to Kansas City after a trade deal was struck on Tuesday.

It hasn't been a flurry of moves by Sporting Kansas City lately, more like a blizzard. Ike Opara is the next part of the storm.

The 23 year old defender was traded to Sporting KC from the San Jose Earthquakes earlier today for Sporting KC's natural second round pick in the 2013 MLS Superdraft. Opara was taken third overall in the first round of the 2010 MLS Superdraft by San Jose.

Opara also has national team experience, picking up seven appearances for the United States U20 national team and four appearances for the U23 team in 2012.

In three seasons with the Earthquakes, Opara has appeared in 35 matches for the senior club.

It appears that Opara will be some very good depth for the Sporting KC defenders for the CONCACAF Champions League and the US Open Cup in the 2013 season, and a possible replacement for Besler if Besler goes over to Europe in the next few years or so.

According to Kansas City Star reporter Tod Palmer, the blizzard of moves is not done yet. He has it from Peter Vermes that another move will be announced tomorrow. Stay tuned to the Daily Wiz for all the latest info on Sporting KC's off-season moves.
