News broke today on The Mirror.co that Wigan Athletic have joined the race to sign Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza. Wigan joins Spanish clubs Athletico Madrid, Mallorca, Sevilla, and Getafe as the confirmed teams vying for Roger's signature (although there are surely more). According to the article, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez wants to sign the Honduran international before the end of the English transfer deadline on Friday(also when France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Scotland's transfer deadline ends).

Apparently Martinez has already spoke with the 25 year old, who is willing to join the Latics, but there could be a set back seeing as "the move hinges on compensation". Now, while every transfer rumor you see isn't going to always be necessarily true, there may be some validity to the compensation part of the suggested transfer. Seeing as the conclusion of this season will mark the end of Espinoza's current contract with the club, Sporting KC will want to either sell Roger to the highest bidder, or lock him up on a much longer - and pricier - deal so that Espinoza can't simply walk away to a different club at the end of this year's campaign.

Espinoza has stated in previous interviews that he would indeed prefer a move to a top European club than stay in America with SKC - and why shouldn't he? - but only time will tell. Basically, if Roger hasn't left by Saturday we'll know he's signed an extension onto his contract with Sporting.
