U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called in Sporting KC defender Matt Besler and midfielder/forward Graham Zusi to camp. The duo will join the U.S. Men's National Team in Cleveland following Sporting Kansas City's match against the Houston Dynamo on May 26.
Besler and Zusi are part of the 26 players that begin training camp in Cleveland in preparation for a five-game stretch in May and June that includes three FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the Centennial Celebration Match against Germany. A total of 29 players will participate, including four MLS goalkeepers that will rotate through camp. Only five field players are from MLS including the two Sporting KC players.
Both of Besler's first two appearances with the U.S. Men's National Team have resulted in scoreless draws. First against Canada in a friendly and then more recently versus Mexico at Estadio Azteca earning the United States and important point in World Cup qualifying. There was concern if Besler would be ready for National Team duty after having missed three straight matches with Sporting but he has recently begun training again.
"I'm very excited and honored to get another opportunity to play for the National Team," Besler said via press release. "These upcoming qualifiers are very big games and we're excited that two of them are at home, so we're looking to get a lot of points and position ourselves to qualify for the World Cup. I can't wait to start working."
Zusi is becoming a veteran on the National Team having played in each of the United States last six FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and has made 10 total appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team.
"It's an honor that never gets old," Zusi said via press release. "I'm really excited about the upcoming games; a few big ones, a couple friendlies to lead up to the qualifiers against some very good teams. I'm ready to get back into it and get some points to push us up the rankings in the Hex."
