It started off well enough for the Blues but Chicago controlled the rest of the match as the Red Stars downed the Blues 3-1 at Shawnee Mission District Stadium.
These two teams met on Thursday in Chicago and that resulted in a 2-0 victory for FC Kansas City. The Blues looked like they were headed for a similar result right as the match began. In the third minute Renae Cuellar tapped in a cross to open the scoring, marking her return from injury. Jones was credited with the assist on the cross and the Blues went up 1-0 early.
Chicago struck back later in the first half. A Lori Chalupny cross found the head of an unmarked Inka Grings at the backpost to equalize the match at 1-1. That would be the end of the scoring for the half as the teams went into the locker room drawn 1-1.
The Red Stars would take the lead in the 58th minute. A long run from Taryn Hemmings resulted in a class finish from Ella Masar to put Chicago up 2-1. Chicago would end up staying in the lead for the rest of the match.
Chicago added some insurance in stoppage time as Chalupny was taken down in the box by Nia Williams, resulting in a penalty for the Red Stars. Sonja Fuss would bury the PK to give Chicago a 3-1 lead which would be the final score.
Chicago stayed in sixth place but picked up three vital points and are now only one point behind the Boston Breakers. They will play the Flash on Wednesday as they try and climb the standings.
The Blues dropped down to fourth place with the loss and their two-game win streak was snapped. They sit one point behind Western New York but the Flash have a game in hand against the Blues. They return to action next Sunday as they take on the Washington Spirit for the first time this season.
