Sporting Kansas City waived defender Josh Gardner Tuesday to make room for another player that they are close to signing.
Manager Peter Vermes says they are close to signing a new player, "Hopefully this week."
"We've been working on a few players for quite some time," Vermes continued. "We haven't been able to fit the roster together the way we wanted to in certain situations. Negotiations just crept along slowly, that happens sometimes. The good thing is because of the extension of our window is longer, it gives us a chance to work on those guys and it kind of takes competitors out of the way."
The MLS transfer window runs through May 12th while most larger leagues windows have already closed.
Vermes would not elaborate on what position or any more details of the potential new player but it does sound close. Vermes has mentioned being close to the new player before, even that they were at one time closer to this other player than Toni.
Gardner (31) appeared in nine MLS matches, three CONCACAF Champions League games and two U.S. Open Cup fixtures for Sporting Kansas City since joining the club in December 2012. In seven MLS seasons, Gardner has played in 59 games (including postseason) with three goals and six assists.
Sporting Kansas City currently has 28 players on the roster with the departure of Gardner, and Peterson Joseph on the Disabled List. Sporting Kansas City has one on-budget roster spot and one off-budget roster spot available.
