Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of 2014 MLS SuperDraft selection Alex Martinez. The 22-year-old midfielder was drafted in the third round out of North Carolina State University.
Martinez looked good in his opportunities with Sporting KC in preseason, contributing three assists in seven appearances.
"I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to play for the best team in MLS," Martinez said via press release. "I have worked for this my whole life. Since I was three or four years old, I have wanted to play professional soccer. Now that it's happened, I want to make the most of the opportunity."
Good signing or just allocation fodder for Sporting KC's affiliates?
Both, sort of.
Martinez looked strong in preseason and made a good case for himself at the combine. He does look like a good candidate to be sent to either Orlando City or the Oklahoma Energy but Vermes is not signing players as filler at this point.
