FC Kansas City forward Amy Rodriguez was voted the NWSL Player of the Week for her two goal performance on Mother's Day in week 5.
"In the beginning of the year I was scoring goals but we weren't necessarily winning so for me, to get the goals and the win is just icing on the cake," Rodriguez explained. "Super happy, couldn't be more happy to beat the Spirit as well since they beat us last game."
Rodriguez, scored the two goals in a 2-1 victory at home over the Washington Spirit and leads the NWSL with a total of six goals. "I can't say anything more about her than I said before," FC Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski said after the match. "I said she was going to score goals, I said she was going to be dangerous and she proves it every game. She is a world class forward, give her a little space and she will put it on frame, put it in the net."
Mothers Day
Rodriguez did not play in the inaugural season of the NWSL so she could have a baby. Rodriguez described the win of the Spirit on Mother's Day as "a little bittersweet". With FC Kansas City in the midst of a very heavy schedule and Rodriguez's call up to the national team, she sent her son home to be with his father for a few weeks. Her first Mother's day had to be spent apart from her son.
Voting
It is unknown who finished second or third in the actual voting but this is how I voted this week.
1. Amy Rodriguez - 2 goals, very dangerous all game
2. Bianca Henninger - great performance coming off bench for Houston
3. Kim Little - dramatic last minute game-winning goal for Seattle
