There is lots of great soccer going on around the area right now and one interesting story that does not involve Sporting KC or FC Kansas City is the U18 Futura FC Academy team. They are in St Louis area playing for the State Cup this weekend.
Good news for them but why is that so special? They are going for what would be their third straight and what appears to be a record fourth overall State Championship. They won in 2009, 2012 and 2013.
They are coached by some familiar names to Kansas City soccer fans. Comets and FC Kansas City President Brian Budzinski, Dr Neil Kelly father of two pro soccer players (Katie and Maegan Kelly) and Doug McLagan (Comets assistant and Blue Springs High School coach) give the team some great leadership.
The 22 boys on the team are all going to play at the college level with at least three going to Division 1 schools (Kyle McLagan - Furman, Robert Kelly - Tulsa, Charlie Raasch - Northern Illinois).
Most of the teams in the division are from the St Louis area including teams affiliated with Scott Gallagher (Development Academy) and Sporting KC affiliate Sporting St Louis Rangers.
Play kicks off this afternoon and results can be checked here.
Good Luck boys!
Are there any other Kansas City area teams that need to be mentioned?
