FC Kansas City is on the road to face the Western New York Flash at 6:00p.m. CT tonight. The match will be a test of both teams depth with numerous national team call ups and injuries, especially for the Blues. Sauerbrunn, Holiday and Rodriguez are with the U.S. Women's National Team in preparation to play Canada on Thursday.
"The obvious challenge is how to replace Becky (Sauerbrunn), Cheney (Lauren Holiday) and A-Rod (Amy Rodriguez)," FC Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski explained. "Another challenge is Erika Tymrak is injured now so we are going to have to think about that one as well. That is why we drafted the young players and we have faith in them that they are going to step up and do the job for us."
The NWSL injury report has Liz Bogus and Amy LePeilbet listed as out and Kassey Kallman and Erika Tymrak listed as probable but Andonovski did not sound optimistic on Tymrak. "Erika is questionable, it looks like she is not going to get to play but it will be a game time decision."
Both teams are in the same boat and both teams will be relying on players who normally don't get a lot of minutes. Western New York will be without four players who have been called to play with their national teams. Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd will be with the USWNT while Sonia Bermudez and Vicky Losada will be with the Spanish National Team.
FC Kansas City switched back to their more familiar 4-2-3-1 formation for the last two games and won both of those. "I see us playing the same formation," Andonovski said. "The players have been with the team, they know what we are trying to do and how we do things so nothing should change."
Without Sauerbrunn, FC Kansas City will probably slot second year defender Nia Williams at outside back and possibly move Kallman to center back next to Nikki Phillips with Robinson on the outside.
With no Tymrak or Holliday in the midfield or Rodriguez up top, rookies Frances Silva and Morgan Marlborough may see some significant time along with veteran Melissa Henderson and Merritt Mathias.
FC Kansas City announced today that they called up reservists Missy Geha and Molly Dreska to be available for the match. Both are listed as midfielders but can slot into multiple spots.
Possible formation:
Barnhart
Williams - Phillips - Kallman - Robinson
Richmond - Buczkowski
Henderson - Silva - Mathias
Marlborough
Subs: Keane, Dreska, Geha
