The top of the table clash between FC Kansas City and the Seattle Reign had lots of opportunities but few goals as they battled to a 1-1 draw.
The match extended FC Kansas City's season long home unbeaten run to eleven games.
FC Kansas City struck early when Lauren Holiday put in a nice, quick ball to Amy Rodriguez, who fired it past Hope Solo near post for the goal. It was Rodriguez's 12th goal of the year, which put her into second in the league.
The Blues bunkered down after that, trying to maintain their one-goal lead but managed to still create some chances. In the 22nd minute, Sara Hagan received a ball down the flank and managed to get a shot off inside the box. Her far post shot, however, was too wide.
Two minutes later, the Blues had shifted to a more attacking strategy and wound up in the box. The ball ended up at the feet of Amy Rodriguez, who tried to chip it far post but it barely missed wide. In the 28th minute, Jenna Richmond slotted a ball through to Lauren Holiday on the byline, whose shot was pushed away by Solo, narrowly missing going in on the far post.
Midway through the first half, the game between the Washington Spirit and the Chicago Red Stars ended with a 2-1 victory for the Spirit. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Blues, although it did mean that they could not clinch home field advantage, no matter their result against the Reign.
Seattle would try to claw back in the second half, garnering a few opportunities to do so. In the 65th minute, the Reign went on the attack and a cross was sent into the box by Kim Little. Sydney LeRoux was on the other end of it but was just a bit behind the ball, forcing her shot wide of goal.
The Reign did equalize in the 68th minute when Megan Rapinoe headed in a rebound off of a Barnhart save for the goal. It was her fourth goal of the year.
FC Kansas City forced Solo to make a few saves as the rest of the half wore down, getting in a few opportunities to try and take the lead. Seattle started to force more opportunities late, including a shot by Rapinoe in the second minute of stoppage time that was surely headed toward goal but was punched over the bar by Barnhart.
That would be the last chance of the game as FC Kansas City and the Seattle Reign battled to a 1-1 draw. FC Kansas City plays their final regular season Wednesday against the Boston Breakers, before ending the season Saturday in Chicago.
