Five targets for Sporting Kansas City in the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft

Sporting Kansas City can fill their roster with available players in the MLS Re-entry draft.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Sporting Kansas City has always passed in the Major League Soccer re-entry draft, but there's a first time for everything. Today at 2 p.m. central time, Sporting KC will have plenty of targets to scoop up if they decide to go that route. Here are some potential options based on need.

Chris Konopka- Goalkeeper

Sporting Kansas City needs a goalkeeper to backup Tim Melia and Chris Konopka could be a decent option there. He started 22 games for Toronto FC and comes at cheap price since he only made $66k last season. The 30-year-old would be trusted with starting Sporting KC's early US Open Cup games and CONCACAF Champions League games and also being an option should Tim Melia get injured or flame out in 2016.

Chris Schuler- Defender

Schuler was a very good defender for Real Salt Lake but ended up with an injury plagued season in 2015 that led to his release by RSL. His 6'4" frame could provide Sporting Kansas City with good height and he could battle with Ike Opara for the starting job, meaning Sporting would have very good depth either way at centerback. His $165k salary may make Vermes wary, plus he may be a popular pick but he could be an option if he is still available at Sporting KC's turn.

Michael Farfan- Midfielder

Farfan can play all sides of the midfield and can even play up a bit, but not often. This move would indicate that Sporting KC would not agree to a deal with Paulo Nagamura, and Farfan would likely come cheaper and give Sporting KC the option to play him out on the midfield wings or to spell Roger Espinoza.

Vicente Sanchez- Forward

Sanchez's age (36) and salary ($210k) make this option very unlikely but if Sporting were to take a chance on him he could provide some value as a super sup on the wings. In a limited role, he could be a decent attacking player to spell Graham Zusi or Krisztian Nemeth and could provide a better option to come on late in the game than attacking options in the past.

Jairo Arrieta- Forward

Another DC United player, Arrieta could be the backup center forward that Sporting Kansas City has needed for the past couple of seasons. When Dom Dwyer is hurt or earns a suspension, Sporting KC needs a player who can step in and be a decent center forward without sacrificing quality on the wing. Arrieta could be that guy and could also be able to give Dwyer rest when needed so that the starting XI isn't completely worn out by October.
