Jon Kempin loaned to San Antonio Scorpions

Sporting Kansas City has loaned keeper Jon Kempin to NASL club, the San Antonio Scorpions for the 2015 season.

This came as a bit of a surprise since it was assumed he would re-join Oklahoma City Energy FC with whom he spent the 2014 season. Energy FC is also coached by former Sporting KC captain and keeper Jimmy Nielsen and they have a loan agreement with Sporting KC, so the move to send Kempin to San Antonio is perplexing.

Kempin was not likely to play with Sporting KC in 2015 with Luis Marin as the starter and Tim Melia brought in to back him up, which allowed Kempin the freedom to start on loan somewhere else like in 2014. He did, however, have to make a couple of starts with Sporting KC after Eric Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum went down with injuries.

San Antonio will begin their season on April 4 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Kempin should be the starter. The only other keeper on the Scorpions' roster is Daryl Sattler, who did not start in 2014 so he will likely back up Kempin.

As perplexing and unexpected as the move may be, Kempin will at least be earning more starting minutes in an atmosphere he's not familiar with, which can only help when it comes time for him to be the full-time Sporting KC keeper.
