The fourth round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup brings 17 MLS teams into the mix. US Soccer announced today Sporting Kansas City will face the winner of Minnesota United FC vs St. Louis FC. Either way it turns out, June 16th at Sporting Park will be an interesting match up.
Minnesota United FC is in 4th place in the NASL after winning the equivalent of the Supporter's Shield last season. Sporting Kansas City eliminated them from the tournament a year ago in this very match up. MUFC are scheduled to begin play in MLS in 2018 and are led by midfield Miguel Ibarra, who has featured several times on the US Men's National team. It would be nice to get a close look at what Jurgen Klinsmann likes so much about Ibarra, and also remind them they aren't in MLS quite yet. Also, partially just because they have cool jerseys. But no stadium yet.
St. Louis FC is in its first year of existence, has a record of 3-3-1. They are the Chicago Fire's USL affiliate and play in Fenton, MO at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. As St. Louis works toward bringing MLS to the city, SKC may get the chance to play a team from STL for the first time ever. Its hard to have a rivalry with a team in the USL but everyone in KC would love to hand it to a team from St. Louis! They are too far from actually getting a team there to know if it would be them, but St. Louis FC is building a youth network built already. The team owners are affiliated with the very large youth team St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club and the youth director, Dale Schilly, was named head coach.
As far as 4th round of USOC goes, either game would be a fun match up for KC. You can buy tickets starting on May 26th at 10am from Ticketmaster. The fifth round will be played two weeks later should Sporting advance.
