FC Kansas City knew the match at Western New York would be tough; it was one of two locations where the Blues had never won. The Flash started strong and dominated much of the first half, outshooting the visitors 11-3 but FC Kansas City's Nicole Barnhart came up with 6 saves to keep the game scoreless.
The second half started the same way, prompting FC Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski to bring midfielder Mandy Laddish on for forward Shea Groom.
"We didn't match their physicality and lost a lot of balls in the middle of the field but we switched the formation and put Mandy Laddish in the middle, Andonovski explained. "I think we matched the numbers and Mandy gave us a little spark at the end to get the result."
With the addition of Laddish in the 67th minute, the Blues switched from a 4-4-2 to more of their traditional 4-2-3-1, which helped shut down the Flash's dominance in the middle.
In the 73rd minute, that move paid off even more when Laddish fed Liz Bogus to the left side. Bogus sped towards goal holding off the defender and blasted a shot over Flash goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo to take the lead 1-0.
The Flash pushed and pushed for an equalizer but the young squad could not find the back of the net.
"Very happy with the result," Andonovski observed. "Obviously we did not play our best game but we definitely played hard, especially in the second half. We left everything on the field and I'm especially proud of the players."
Western New York will be looking for revenge in a few days when they come to Kansas City on May 14th.
