Marcel de Jong called up by Canada for 2015 Gold Cup

The new Sporting KC left back will be unavailable to the team once again as he participates for Canada in the 2015 Gold Cup

Sporting Kansas City defender Marcel de Jong will be representing Canada in the 2015 Gold Cup, the Canadian federation announced Tuesday. He will be absent for Sporting KC from June 28 through at least July 14, depending on if Canada advances past the group stage.

De Jong has made 33 appearances for the Canadian side, including a couple of appearances in friendlies earlier this year. He has appeared in every Gold Cup for Canada going back to 2009.

He is slated to miss three matches for Sporting KC at least, two regular season matches and a US Open Cup fixture.

Canada open their Gold Cup campaign July 8 against El Salvador in Carson, Cali. before taking on Jamaica July 11 in Houston. They close the group stage with a favorable location, taking on Costa Rica in Toronto.

For Sporting KC, their situation at left back depth is fairly decent. They should have Seth Sinovic as the starter, barring continuation of his injury, or the rookie Amadou Dia for the time de Jong will be gone.
