With the 18th pick FC Kansas City selected defender Brianne Reed, a defender from Rutgers University. Reed is a bit undersized center back at just 5-5 but the New Jersey native was one of the highest rated defenders in the draft. She anchored a stingy defense with 18 shutouts on the season and they also had the nation's best goals against average. She is known for her athleticism and 1v1.

Picking up good defenders that can play outside back and center back was definitely the focus for the defending NWSL champions. Reed will likely backup Becky Sauerbrunn and Brittany Taylor initially but should have opportunity to play with Sauerbrunn's national team duty.
