Mikey Lopez bids farewell to Sporting Kansas City

The former first round draft pick is evidently on his way out of Kansas City.

Midfielder Mikey Lopez will likely not return to Sporting Kansas City after he posted on social media a farewell to the club Monday evening.

Lopez was a Generation Adidas prospect and a former first round pick for Sporting Kansas City in 2013. His contract, as well as his Generation Adidas status, ran out following the 2014 season, which meant his contract would have counted against the salary cap if he had re-signed. He made $100k base salary with $170k in total in 2015.

Lopez never really found form with Sporting KC, going on loan to Orlando City and Oklahoma City Energy FC He was the third option for center midfield behind Roger Espinoza and Paulo Nagamura; with the addition of Jordi Quintilla, Lopez became the odd man out.

Since Nagamura re-signed this offseason, Sporting KC has healthy depth in the central midfield with Espinoza's position bolstered by Nagamura and Quintilla.
