Mikey Lopez has signed with New York City FC, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Lopez had posted a farewell to Sporting Kansas City on Monday.
Lopez was Sporting KC's first round draft pick in 2013 and never found a foothold with the club. He spent the majority of his time either with Orlando City or Oklahoma City Energy FC on loan and was far down on the depth chart at central midfield. His contract ran out after the 2015 season and was not re-signed by Sporting KC.
The release from New York City FC said that the club picked up Lopez on waivers, which would suggest that Sporting KC let him go.
The 22-year-old will likely provide depth at central midfield in New York. For more coverage of NYCFC and Lopez's further journeys, take a look at our sister site Hudson River Blue.
