Sporting KC to induct Kerry Zavagnin to Sporting Legends

Kerry Zavagnin to be inducted as a Sporting Legend on Saturday at Children's Mercy Park at Sporting KC's match against Vancouver Whitecaps.

On Saturday, another Sporting Legend will go up on the wall at Children's Mercy Park. The club announced today that Kerry Zavagnin will be inducted to the hall of honor on Saturay's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Zavagnin was selected after on online vote also featuring Mo Johnston, Ron Newman and Josh Wolff. He will be the eight member inducted to Sporting Legends after SKC launched it in 2013.

Kerry has been integral to the club and the soccer community in KC since he joined the Wizards in 2000. After being a mainstay in the midfield for nine seasons. In 2009 he became an assistant coach and he's helped usher the club into the top class of Major League Soccer as Peter Vermes' right hand man.

As a player, KZ was part of seven post season apperances in his nine years, as well as winning MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield. Across all competitions, he is the club's all-time leader in games played, games started, & minutes played. His exploits even earned him National Team duty as he tallied 21 caps between 2000-2006.

After winning MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield, and the US Open Cup as a player; Kerry has added three more trophies (12' & 15' USOC and 13' MLS Cup) to his collection as a coach. Zavagnin's current 17 year streak with one club is only matched by Ben Olsen, who has been with DC United as a player or coach since 1998.

For me it is odd to have a legend who is still active, but KZ is definitely deserving of the honor.
