The prediction from last week came true and Sporting Kansas City announced that they have acquired forward Christian Volesky. Sporting KC sent their natural fourth-round pick (80th overall) in the 2017 MLS Super Draft to Portland. Volesky, 24, was signed to a one-year contract with options for 2018, 2019 and 2020.
"Christian is a player who fits many of the characteristics we are looking for in our team," Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said via press release. "He is a young, hungry player who we've followed closely over the past two years and who we feel can give us depth in a position of need."
Volesky was drafted by Portland in the 2015 Super Draft but was unsigned by them. The Nevada native ended up with the Rochester Rhinos where he scored eight goals and three assists in 2015 and ten goals and four assists in 2016.
At the 2015 MLS Combine, Volesky earned the MVP award and scored two goals. He also performed well on the fitness tests, coming in first on the agility test and second in speed (30-meter dash).
Volesky seems to be able to score with both his head and his feet and play at least as a center forward or more withdrawn into the midfield as well. With Sporting KC’s typical formation he may get a look at winger as well.
Think Volesky is a good add for SKC?
