FC Kansas City announced this week that they have loaned midfielder Christina Gibbons to Melbourne Victory of Australia’s W-League.
Gibbons was selected by FC Kansas City in the first round of the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League Draft.
Traditionally a defender, Gibbons made the switch to midfield in the middle of the season for Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski. Mostly in a defensive mid role, but sometimes attacking, Gibbons helped the Blues turn around a poor start.
“I'm really excited to be joining Melbourne Victory this off-season. Everyone has already been extremely welcoming and I'm eager to get over there, get lots of game experience, and explore the culture,” said Gibbons via press release.
Melbourne Victory Head Coach Jeff Hopkins expects to use Gibbons in that same role but most likely in a 4-3-3 formation instead of FCKC’s typical 4-2-3-1.
Hopkins’ squad can definitely use the help after finishing last season in last place with a 2-3-7 record and a -11 goal differential.
Gibbons is expected to return from her loan prior to the start of the 2018 season.
FC Kansas City loaned Erika Tymrak and Alex Arlitt to W-League teams. Arlitt made five appearances for the Western Sydney Wanderers before being inured and missing the Blues season.
Tymrak helped Melbourne City to a fourth place finish in league play and the championship in the playoffs.
