The United States Men's National Team earned Bruce Arena his first win in The Bruce 2.0 era Friday night. Seattle Sounders’ Jordan Morris and Sporting Kansas City’s Benny Feilhaber combined in the 59th minute for the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over Jamaica.

Sporting KC’s Graham Zusi wore the captain’s arm band for the first time for the U.S. as he and Feilhaber both started the match. This was Feilhaber’s first start for the U.S. since 2013. For Zusi it was a continuation of the Arena experiment with him at right back.

At times Jamaica was willing to pack it in and counter which is a tactic the U.S. will often see in CONCACAF, although not as often now that they are in the hex. When Jamaica did advance out Dax McCarty was able to turn most of them back.

Arena again seemed to be pleased with Zusi’s progress as a defender. The veteran was part of keeping the ball in the Jamaican end and provided some dangerous service into the box as well. The most obvious moment that showed Zusi is still a rookie at right back was when the long legged Cory Burke was able to use his size and speed to get past Zusi. It was Jamaica’s best chance in the first half as Burke was able to cross the ball into the box where it deflected over the goal off of Romario Williams’s knee.

The moment of beauty for the U.S. began when McCarty played the ball into a tight pocket to Feilhaber. A turning back heel slid it to Morris. Another quick couple passes between the pair resulted in Feilhaber feeding Morris into the box with a good look at goal. Morris had missed a few other chances but did not fail on this opportunity and slotted his shot under the keeper’s reach for the game winner.

The best news of the January camp?

At least as far as we know, none of the Sporting KC players were injured at ll in camp and should join their team mates soon for preseason already in good shape.
