Power to the People : Week 2 Power Rankings

An early look at the rankings

MLS: FC Dallas at Sporting KC Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

I usually try to save season long ratings posts until after there’s half a dozen or so games to play, but decided to try to mix it up a little bit this season and go ahead and throw the gauntlet down on Week 2. I actually did have rankings for Week 0 (based on last season) as well as Week 1, but felt sitting on it so I’d at least have three numbers to look at, i.e. How was Team X last season, how’d they do in their first game, and now was that first game a fluke or is there enough to go on after a second game?

Realistically, yes, it’s still way too early in the season to parse out any real trends, other then, perhaps, things are not going as well as hoped in Minnesota. But generally, I think what my spreadsheets spit out (to summarize, a ranking of teams based on recent win loss form, recent goal differentials, and season long trends) look reasonable, and tracks well with what I’ve seen other sites post. I was a bit surprised to see LA so low so quick... oh Curt Onalfo.

So, that said, here are some (way too early) Week 2 Power Rankings. Personally, based on what I’ve seen, I think Kansas City is rated a bit low, but two games without a goal is kind of annoying as a fan. But two games without giving up a goal is pretty neat. Sooner or later, time will tell...

Rank Team Record (W-L-D) Points

1 Portland Timbers (2-0-0) 6

2 New York Red Bulls (2-0-0) 6

3 FC Dallas (1-0-1) 4

4 Houston Dynamo (2-0-0) 6

5 San Jose Earthquakes (2-0-0) 6

6 Colorado Rapids (1-1-0) 3

7 Chicago Fire (1-0-1) 4

8 New York City FC (1-1-0) 3

9 Orlando City (1-0-0) 3

10 Toronto FC (0-0-2) 2

11 Atlanta United (1-1-0) 3

12 Philadelphia Union (0-0-2) 2

13 Sporting Kansas City (0-0-2) 2

14 Seattle Sounders (0-1-1) 1

15 Vancouver Whitecaps (0-1-1) 1

16 Montreal Impact (0-1-1) 1

17 Real Salt Lake (0-1-1) 1

18 Columbus Crew (0-1-1) 1

19 DC United (0-1-1) 1

20 New England Revolution (0-1-1) 1

21 LA Galaxy (0-2-0) 0

22 Minnesota United (0-2-0) 0

Perhaps interesting to know that five of the top seven teams are in the West? Again, broken record, but I do think the off-season reset and general parity make it hard to really get into the weeds on team rankings this early, so ignore my doctor’s advice and take everything with a grain of salt...
