FC Kansas City comes up short in Chicago

The Blues fall 1-0 at Red Stars

Thad Bell

After a stunning victory on opening day last weekend, FC Kansas City was unable to take home a W on their first road game of the 2017 season. The game started off with an early save in the 5th minute by keeper Nicole Barnhart. The saves kept coming with Barnhart making 3 big saves in the first 30 minutes of the game.

In the 41st minute there was a foot race that found Sofia Huerta beating Christina Gibbons and finding Julie Ertz (formerly Johnston). Ertz sent a beautiful shot past that goal line into the back of the net. Gibby was temporarily treated off the field for a blood nose but quickly was back to her eager playing style on the field.

The Blues looked feisty when they came back on the field for the second half. They managed to outshoot Chicago 8-6 during this half, but unfortunately none of the shots were able to make it past the keeper. The most riveting point of the second half was a missed penalty shot by Chicago’s Christen Press that sailed past the post.

Overall, the Blues looked fairly good. They seemed to be communicating well and fought hard to score an equalizer in the second half. Although today’s game wasn’t what they had hoped for, the team should be proud of how much they’ve accomplished since last season.

Next week, they will get another go at an away with while playing Sky Blue FC in New Jersey. Be sure to check it out!
