After a first half that Sporting Kansas City was dominant in possession but could not find the net, the second half quickly changed everything. Not only could Sporting KC not find the net in the first half, it was the first time they did even register a shot at all in the first half in club history.
Seattle, despite the possession difference had several chances in the initial 45 minutes that went wide or forced Tim Melia to make key saves.
Peter Vermes may have been unhappy with the first half performance.
“Basically Peter had to scream at us on what we were doing so that we change our mind and we went to the second half with everything,” Gerso told reporters in the post game press conference.
Vermes nodded his head head and smiled.
Benny Feilhaber agreed with that, “He fired us up at half time.”
It did not take long in the second half to make the difference. In the span of two minutes Gerso put the home team up 2-0 with goals in the 56th and 58th minutes.
First Gerso collected a deflected Feilhaber corner and got off a shot that was redirected inside the near post leaving Stefan Frei frozen.
Gerso quickly followed that up in the 58th minute. Jimmy Medranda crossed a ball in through the box to Gerso. His initial shot hit the post but rebounded out, off a defender and to Gerso’s foot where he put it behind the diving Frei
Gerso completed the hat trick but used a little more help this time. With Sporting Kansas City controlling the match, some deft passing between Feilhaber and Graham Zusi led to the goal. Feilhaber brought the ball down the middle and then slid it out to Zusi cutting into the box. Zusi then sliced it across the porous Seattle defense picking out Gerso who popped it into the upper corner for the third and final goal.
The rest of the match was all about just closing it out and limiting the Sounders chances .
