Sporting Kansas City has learned their opponent for their opening match of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sporting KC will host Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, June 14th at 7:30.
This is the third meeting since 2014 for the two clubs. Minnesota was part of the NASL the previous two times and Sporting KC won both of those.
In 2016, U.S. Open Cup defending champions Sporting KC and the Loons traded penalties in regulation time. Diego Rubio scored the overtime winner to make it 2-1. SKC advanced to the next round where they lost to Houston.
In 2014 Sporting KC’s Soony Saad and Alex Martinez scored and the defense held Minnesota scoreless. Sporting KC lost in the next round to Portland.
Minnesota is now in MLS and beat Sporting KC when they faced each other May 7th in Minnesota. The Loons and Sporting KC will face each other once more on June 3rd before the Open Cup clash.
With MLS clubs based in the United States entering this round of the Open Cup, the Sporting KC and Minnesota match will be one of 3 all MLS team matches in the round of 32.
