The game began with an early deflection into the back of the Blues goal from a shot by Kristie Mewis (who was actually drafted by FCKC) in the 4th minute. FC Kansas City didn’t let that get the best of them and answered with their own goal in the 9th, a beautiful goal by forward Sydney Leroux off of an assist by fellow forward Brittany Ratcliffe.
Alexa Newfield was issued a yellow card in the 15th minute for a challenge in the midfield. The Blues once again sent the ball into the back of the net in the 19th minute, only to have it called back for a foul. The second goal for the Blues came in the 27th minute with another Leroux that was unassisted. The first half would end with three minutes of added time where the Blues fought to find another goal, but went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
FC Kansas City came out with a new intensity in the second half. They could taste the win and they continued to chase after goals. In the 60th minute, captain Becky Sauerbrunn scored the third goal for the Blues with a header off of a corner kick.
The 70th minute gave Alexa Newfield her second yellow card of the game, resulting in the Blues playing down a player for the rest of the game. The Spirit tried to make the most of their advantage with a shot from Ordega into the back of the net, but she was called offsides before the goal. They would however go on to score their second goal in the 83rd minute. The Blues managed to hold on through the rest of the game and the seven minutes of stoppage time despite fierce competition from the Spirit.
Overall, FCKC gave a solid performance. There were some missed calls on the part of the referee going both ways that greatly changed the game. There also seemed to be some tension from the game last week resulting in some feisty competition from the players.
The Blues return to the pitch next week playing North Carolina. Be sure to check them out on Lifetime TV Network!
