With so many tired legs having already played two matches this week; Sporting Kansas City gave several of the normal starters a rest. SKC manager Peter Vermes gave his midfield a rest as none of the regular midfielders were on the field to start the match.
Ilie Sanchez had played every minute of every game up until this point but newly signed James Musa took over his holding mid role and Soni Mustivar filled in for Roger Espinoza. Benny Feilhaber’s normal replacement Jimmy Medranda took his place also to complete a different but not bad midfield trio.
While Sporting KC did not challenge the Seattle Sounders goal to any great degree, possession in the first half hour belonged to SKC. Seattle did chip away at controlling the game as the half went on and were rewarded in the 36th minute.
Cristian Roldan slid the ball out to the right for Jordan Morris who had some space and time. Morris picked out fellow U.S. international Clint Dempsey in the box. Melia did not get a good jump to make the save on Dempsey’s header and the half ended with the Sounders up 1-0.
In the 60th minute SKC started funneling subs in to the match. Latif Blessing replaced Soony Saad and immediately SKC looked more dangerous. Benny Feilhaber replaced Soni Mustivar three minutes later to continue to amp up the pressure. Cristian Lobato came on for Gerso for the third substitution.
The visitors did start threatening more effectively but they were unable to put one past Stefan Frei to equalize.
