What We Want to Happen Today 9/20

What Sporting want to happen in the two MLS games tonight.

MLS: New England Revolution at Sporting KC Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Whlie Sporting Kansas City is preparing for tonight's US Open Cup final against the New York Red Bulls, four MLS teams will be taking the field in a pair of games. Neither one of the games has huge ramifications on Sporting KC and their attempt to make the playoffs, but one of them does have some potential barring on hosting MLS Cup. So while we’re wanting a trophy to come back to KC today, here's what Sporting wants to happen while they're preparing for the US Open Cup final.

LA at Atlanta

What we want to happen - LA win

Los Angeles' max number of points is only one more than Sporting currently has, the Galaxy aren't going to be catching Sporting at this point. Atlanta meanwhile plays their final game in hand on Sporting and sits just one point back of Kansas City. The Galaxy taking points of Atlanta United would be helpful for KC in this situation. While that may not be good odds, LA is tied for the second most road wins this season in MLS with five, so there is a chance.

Montreal at Toronto

What we want to happen - Does not matter

While this isn't entirely true, it may as well be. Toronto currently sits on 62 points, the maximum points that Sporting can get this season, so one more point and Sporting can't catch Toronto in the single table. Montreal meanwhile sits on 36 points, seventh place in the Eastern Conference, six points behind sixth place New York for the final playoff spot. While Montreal can still catch Kansas City on points, that seems unlikely at this stage of the season. So if you want to root for someone you can root for Toronto to keep Montreal from catching up with KC, but it likely won't matter.
