Felipe Gutierrez became the third Sporting Kansas City player called up this week as he was named to the Chilean national team for upcoming friendlies against Peru and Mexico.
This is the first call up for Gutierrez since last October when he featured for Chile in their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign, which was ultimately unsuccessful. Since 2010, Gutierrez has featured for Chile 35 times, scoring four goals.
The matches against Peru and Mexico are on October 12 and 16 respectively, meaning he will miss the Sporting KC match against Vancouver on October 17. In addition to Gutierrez, Sporting will also be without Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi, who were called up by Scotland and Hungary respectively.
Gutierrez is the second Sporting KC man to play for Chile this year as Diego Rubio received a call earlier this season. This time around, however, Gutierrez is the only MLS player on the Chilean roster.
This could be a time for Gutierrez to impress as the beginning of the 2022 World Cup qualification cycle will kick off next October. Gutierrez featured for Chile in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
