Much has been said over the last couple years of Peter Vermes continued attempts to find a left back that could supplant Seth Sinovic as the starting left back for Sporting Kansas City. Each year by the end of the season though Sinovic seems to have reclaimed his place in the starting 11. This year it appears that Vermes could be doubling his efforts. Yesterday the club announced that they’d signed free agent, Rodney Wallace and in their releases specifically referred to him as a defender and reports came out that he was expected to compete with Sinovic for the left back position.
Reports have also now come out of France that Sporting is set to sign another left back, Quentin Lecoeuche, who currently plays for US Orleans in the French second division on loan from FC Lorient. According to the report, Sporting was impressed with his offensive capabilities and proposed a “huge salary” for the player.
This report certainly may have been true at one time that Kansas City was interested in the player, but the addition of Wallace yesterday certainly gives some pause to the rumor. With the addition of Wallace and the reports he’ll challenge for the left back spot, it gives KC five players for the left back position on KC’s roster, Sinovic, Wallace, Jimmy Medranda once he’s healthy in the summer, and in a pinch Jaylin Lindsey and Yohan Croizet. So while it’s still possible that this rumor is still true and that KC is looking to add another left back to the roster, I tend to lean towards this being a bit of a dated rumor if it is true.
Lecoeuche is just 24-years-old and a left footed player. He’s spent some time at right back but primarily plays left back. He is on loan to US Orleans until June 30th and he’ll return to Lorient.
