On Campus: Season Wraps Up for Academy Players

An update on academy players in college.

MLS: Portland Timbers at Sporting Kansas City Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The college soccer season is entering it’s final week with the men’s College Cup taking place this coming weekend in Santa Barbara, California. For the players that have graduated from the Sporting Kansas City academy, their seasons are over. This past weekend, Ryan Krutz and Notre Dame lost to Indiana 1-0 while Kentucky, where Colin Innes is red shirting this season, lost 1-0 to Maryland to end both their seasons.

The year was still fairly successful for the Sporting academy players, with red shirt senior, Joey Piatczyc and sophomore Leroy Enzugusi leading the academy graduates in goals with eight each. Piatczyc also led academy graduates in assists with 10 this past season. Defender, Logan Lucas and goalkeeper Steven Tekesky played the most games this season with both playing 21 for West Virginia.

Speaking of goalkeepers, Tekesky finished with the best goals against average of the goalkeepers in college, with a 1.28. Of the other goalkeepers, Krutz is the only other one that got significant time for their school. Among the three freshman goalkeepers, Connor Jordan-Hyde was Virginia Tech’s number 2 goalkeeper all season, backing up Mathijs Swaneveld, who played every minute this season. Jordan-Hyde was also the only other goalkeeper rostered for the ACC and NCAA tournaments.

Among the other freshman, two of them, Innes and Roman Knox were both red shirted this year, while Grayson Barber probably had the most success in his freshman season, appearing in all 17 of Clemson’s game, scoring a goal and adding two assists.

Here’s the full recap of the season for former academy players.
