Across State Lines: Lagerwey Candidate for US Soccer GM Position

Some people may not realize this, but Seattle Sounders GM, Garth Lagerwey used to play in Kansas City. Lagerwey started 22 games for Kansas City back in 1996 when Sporting Kansas City was the Kansas City Wiz. Post playing days, Lagerwey has become arguably the top general manager in the league. With the US Soccer elections this past week over, the federation is now turning to hiring a general manager to oversee the men’s and women’s national teams. Lagerwey is apparently one of the candidates to take over the GM position for the men’s team according to Sports Illustrated. Lagerwey has certainly done well with the Sounders and Real Salt Lake but the big job for the GM once he gets the job will be hiring a coach for the national team. And for all Lagerwey’s success as a GM in MLS, he has only had to hire one coach, Brian Schmetzer.

Speaking of the US Soccer Annual General Meeting last weekend, a former KC player and KC local, Will John played a big role in the election of Carlos Cordeiro as the new president of US Soccer. John is a member of the US Soccer Athlete Council, who voted as a block for Cordeiro to help him get elected. John provided a look at the weekend in a Vlog entry on Youtube.
