Updated 5/18/18: The team made it official that Russell will only go to the second friendly against Mexico. Therefore he will be likely to appear in the Columbus Crew game but will miss the Minnesota United game.
Johnny Russell has only been in Kansas City since the beginning of the 2018 season but he’s already made quite a mark. He has five goals, has two assists and has also earned three penalty kicks that he let teammate Ilie Sanchez take. People are taking notice.
One of those people is Scotland National Team head coach Alex McLeish who has called up Russell to join the Scottish National Team for some end-of-season friendlies against Peru and Mexico.
Russell previously has four caps for the full national team and actually earned his first ever call-up to play against the United States in 2012 but didn’t appear in that game.
The game against Peru is on May 29th and the Mexico game is on June 2nd. Sporting Kansas City play a game against the Columbus Crew at home on May 27th and then play again on June 3rd at home against Minnesota United.
The Blue Testament reached out to the team for comment on when or if Johnny Russell will be released since this is not an actual FIFA window. The team didn’t yet know because the players have had some time off after the schedule congestion of last week. Players are due to return today.
If Russell were to miss one of both of those games it would inevitably be a blow to the clubs offense but Sporting KC do have depth this year unlike what they’ve had in the past. Gerso Fernandes has proved capable off the bench tallying a goal last week against a 10-man Atlanta United squad.
The Blue Testament will bring you more when we have it.
