Early goal sends Rangers to victory over Phoenix Rising FC in heated battle

Former players Zac Lubin, James Musa and Amadou Dia made appearances

The Swope Park Rangers defeated Phoenix Rising FC in a fiery 1-0 victory following a three-game road trip. They now sit in fifth place in the Western Conference.

The hosts dominated in the first half attacking Phoenix’s backline, and it wouldn’t take long for Hadji Barry to score an early goal in the 4th minute, giving the home side a 1-0 lead. Barry has started every match since the beginning of the season and scored four goals, thus far.

Parker Maher attempted to increase the Rangers’ score. However, his strike went straight into Zac Lubin’s arms in the 35th minute. A minute later, Adrian Zendejas blocked a crucial attempt for the home side in a string of spectacular saves. Both teams continued to exchange scoring opportunities with the Rangers managing to hold off Phoenix well into halftime.

With an absent Didier Drogba, Phoenix continually tested Zendejas throughout the second half. Zendejas was first called into action in the 61st minute when he made an incredible save in the box denying Jason Johnson the potential equalizer. Fortunately, the home side claimed all three points in the 1-0 victory.

The Rangers will return on the road when they visit Saint Louis FC on Saturday, June 2. Kickoff is 7:30 pm CT.
