The weekend in Kansas City soccer

From MLS to high school action in Kansas City

Swope Park travels to face cross state rival St Louis FC

While many youth players will be getting ready for tryouts, there is a lot of soccer that is of interest to Kansas City fans this weekend. Sporting Kansas City is of course the main course on Sunday but other locals teams are in action as well.

Kaw Valley FC, an affiliate of Sporting KC in the Premier Development League features college players that have mostly been in the Sporting KC Academy. They have two game this weekend, the first tonight and then one on Sunday afternoon. KVFC are coached by Istvan Urbanyi, former teammate of Peter Vermes and coach of Daniel Salloi in Hungary.

Kansas City has not one, but two teams in the WPSL (Women’s Premier Soccer League) playing this weekend. The Kansas City Athletics (formerly GSI Pride) are connected to the former FC Kansas City youth club and they play on both Saturday and Sunday. The Athletics are coached by former FCKC coach and local legend Huw Williams.

The KC Courage have been around longer and is coached by former FCKC player Katie (Kelly) LaForge. The Courage and the Athletics have a local KC derby on Sunday when former player coaches versus former coach.

On television or streaming, the Swope Park Rangers visit St. Louis, the U.S. continue the rebuild with a match in Ireland and SKC’s Johnny Russell plays for Scotland in Mexico.

The Missouri State High School Girl’s Soccer Championships are being played at Swope Soccer Village Friday and Saturday as well.

And last but not least, Sporting KC’s Academy teams play down at Swope Soccer Village as well on Saturday.
