Misery loves company, right? Join us as we gather for an episode of Shades of Blue: After Dark.
One of your Blue Testament favorites, Ben Gartland, was in town for Sporting Kansas City’s 3-2 defeat to FC Dallas on Saturday night and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have him join the podcast. After a long night at the stadium Cody, Thad, and Ben were in the studio talking all the way into Sunday morning.
All of a sudden it seems as though signing a striker may not be the most pressing issue. Should a center-back be the priority? Ike Opara had a night to forget and looks to be dealing with one - or four - nagging injuries. Matt Besler was also rusty in his return. But the real problem is the lack of depth behind them.
We covered Felipe Gutierrez and his first start since surgery. While he probably earned a PK that went uncalled, he is still clearly far from 100%. Of course it wouldn’t be a real SKC conversation without talking about the striker... or strikers... or lack of strikers. So we have you covered there as well.
Shades of Blue is always a “glass half full” kind of show, but we were challenged in ending on a positive note for the listeners. Gianluca Busio & Jaylin Lindsey were clear bright spots. Gerso Fernrandes’ goal was a thing of beauty. And hey, they pulled one back in stoppage time so you know they were still fighting. But this was a very tough loss and optimism is running low.
It seems more apparent than ever that a summer signing - or four - is necessary. You’ll get a look at Vermes’ track record of summer signings to figure out if reinforcements are coming this season.
So get your drink, or whatever your vice may be, and gather around because our football team has us drinkin’.
