Diego Rubio was added to the list of Sporting Kansas City attackers named to their respective National Teams. The Football Federation of Chile announced Rubio was on the list of players for two friendlies in Asia.
Rubio joins Daniel Salloi and Johnny Russell in being called up during the FIFA international window in September. Johnny Russell will again represent Scotland and Daniel Salloi was called up to the senior Hungarian National team previously but was unable to go. Scotland and Hungary are both playing in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
This is the first call to the Chilean senior team in seven years. Rubio played three matches for the full Chilean team when he was 18 and also represented Chile at the U-20’s. Rubio has earned this look from Chile this season by scoring at incredible rate. With seven goals and five assists in 520 minutes of league play he leads MLS with 1.21 goals per 90 minutes played.
Chile’s Asia trip has them facing Japan on Sept. 7 in Sapporo, Japan, and South Korea on Sept. 11 in Suwon, South Korea.
All three Sporting KC players will be available this weekend versus Seattle before traveling to join their respective national teams. They will all miss the September 8th match versus Orlando City SC but may be available for the following match on September 15th on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes.
