As I watching the Atlanta United vs Colorado Rapids game on Univision, I realized that I had failed to post my “What we want to happen today” for today’s string of MLS games. So while Colorado isn’t doing Sporting Kansas City any favors at the moment, here is what KC fans should be rooting for in the rest of today’s games.
Atlanta at Colorado
What we want to happen - Colorado win
The chances of KC catching Atlanta are slim, but Colorado can’t catch KC on points so rooting for the home team here is what KC fans want.
Montreal at Philadelphia
What we want to happen - Montreal win
A draw here wouldn’t be bad either. Both teams are behind KC in the league’s single table, right now Montreal is further behind (36 points compared to 40 for Philadelphia) meaning them getting the win hurts less in terms of a potential MLS Cup match up with Sporting.
LA at Toronto
What we want to happen - Toronto win
Surprisingly, Toronto’s maximum points for the season is 48, KC’s current point total, so they would need to win out while KC loses out to be equal on points. So with that said, the defending champions taking all three points from the Galaxy is the preferred outcome for KC fans today.
Columbus at Dallas
What we want to happen - Columbus win
I was tempted to take a draw here in terms of MLS Cup hosting as Columbus sits on 43 points, just five behind KC, a draw would allow KC to still be able to pass Dallas with a win tonight. At the same time, a Columbus win would give KC a two point cushion over FC Dallas if they win tonight. Honestly you can go either way with this result, because while a Columbus win would put them two behind KC before they take the field tonight, Columbus is still fourth in the East and would have to get through New York, Atlanta, and NYCFC to get to MLS Cup.
Portland at Houston
What we want to happen - Houston win
Houston’s max point total is currently 49 points, one above KC’s total right now, so a Dynamo win over the Timbers isn’t going to help them close the gap much on KC (and a KC win tonight would take them above Houston’s max point total). So the Dynamo taking all three points and giving KC the chance to extend their lead over fifth place Portland would be in KC’s favor.
Minnesota at Salt Lake
What we want to happen - Minnesota win
Okay, first you need to stop laughing at the idea of Minnesota getting their second road win this season in Salt Lake. Now that that’s done, Minnesota’s max point total is 50, like with Houston a win tonight for KC means they can’t catch Sporting. That means that KC wants them to some how find a way to beat Salt Lake who sit four points behind KC in fourth place in the West.
Seattle at Vancouver
What we want to happen - draw
Seattle sits on 41 points in sixth place in the West, Vancouver sits on 40 points in seventh. While a draw allows both teams to gain a little ground, it is better than either one of the teams earning all three points. If you have to cheer for a winner, the more seperation for the red line the better, which means cheering for Seattle if you must.
New England at LAFC
What we want to happen - New England win
New England is outside looking in at the playoffs right now, and can’t catch KC if Sporting win tonight no matter their result, so defeating LAFC allows Sporting to at least maintain their two point gap over the third place expansion side in the playoff race.
