Across State Lines: Piatczyc Drafted by New York, Groom Traded to Seattle

Two Kansas City locals have new teams heading into the 2019 season. First, former Sporting Kansas City academy player, Joey Piatczyc was drafted by the New York Red Bulls in the fourth round of the MLS Superdraft on Monday this past week. Piatczyc who was the MAC Player of the Year in 2018 while at West Virginia was also the team’s captain and all time leader in assists at the school. Piatczyc is likely to head to the Red Bulls USL Championship team, Red Bulls 2 at this time, but congratulations to the Lee’s Summit native on being drafted.

Elsewhere, Liberty, MO native, Shea Groom has a new team in the NWSL in 2019. Groom was traded by Sky Blue FC to the Seattle Reign for Nahomi Kawasumi. The trade will see Groom reunited with former FC Kansas City manager, Vlatko Andonovski. Groom had two goals and three assists in 21 games last year, but will be rejoining a coach in Andonovski who was able to get the best out of her in Kansas City where she scored 17 goals in 54 appearances for the Blues over her three years with the club.
