This game had a bit of everything. A missed PK. Sloppy play leading to quick scores. A rare goal from the defensive midfielder (Ayyoub Allach). A scuffle on the Hartford bench. And a 97th minute equalizer by the highest scoring teenager in the USL Championship.
Sporting Kansas City II The Swope Park Rangers fielded a lineup light on SKC players on Saturday when they took on the Hartford Athletic in the battle to not be last in the Eastern Conference. Wan Kuzain was the only SKC player to start and Tyler Freeman was on the bench.
This game say Rennico Clarke return from injury (and he looked a bit rusty with some of those botched passes). It also saw Mark Segbers return to the starting lineup at right back, a spot he’d given up recently to Sporting KC man Jaylin Lindsey. Akhmatov also got back in the starting lineup with Felipe Hernandez likely to be with the first team tomorrow.
In the end, it was Wilson Harris who scored very late in stoppage time (the 97th minute when there were only supposed to be four minutes of stoppage time). I’ll credit the ref a bit as Hartford did everything they could to waste time and the ref seemed to add every second back. There was a sub, a yellow card (seconds later by the sub) and the aforementioned scuffle on the bench as the Hartford players tried to delay a throw in.
The game ended 2-2 and the Rangers are starting to show real promise, especially without most of their stars from the first team present. The Rangers stay three points ahead of Hartford to stay clear of the basement with just a few games to go.
