Johnny Russell Dealing with Two Injuries

Now we know why Russell wasn’t called up to play for Scotland.

Sporting Kansas City fans are desperate for any news on the team. The season has been over for more than a month and the two-and-a-half-day trade window came and went without a peep. But this isn’t the news fans wanted.

In a story on BBC, Johnny Russell stated he was “battling two injuries, including a muscle tear.” The story was about Russell defending his Scottish National Team teammates who dropped off the Scotland roster recently. He went on to say, “I know myself I wouldn’t have been able to do myself or the team justice if I was there. I can still feel it even going on little jogs - it’s now just all about getting it right and getting ready for preseason in January and the playoff games in March.”

There are no specifics as to what is injured but it doesn’t sound too serious. The fact that he can go on jogs shows he is probably not too far away from being healthy.

If nothing, one other tiny bit of news came out from Russell’s interview on BBC Radio. Preseason will start in January. That’s pretty typical and without Sporting KC being in CONCACAF Champions League this year, it should start closer to the end of the month unless MLS is further moving up the start of their season.

The Blue Testament will bring you more Sporting KC news as soon as it drops. We have a calendar of all the upcoming offseason dates. By tomorrow the team must release it’s protected players list for next week’s MLS Expansion Draft (see our staff picks here). Plus the pace of the offseason really picks up after that.
