Question of the Day: Man of the Match

In a very good performance there still has to be a best. Who should it be?

Thad Bell

Sporting Kansas City had a decidedly good overall performance versus Toluca FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday night. With goals from Krisztian Nemeth, Gerso Fernandes and Ilie Sanchez and a shutout from the defense, Sporting KC takes a 3-0 lead in the aggregate to Mexico next week.

With the great team performance, it makes it hard to pick a single Man of the Match.

Some likely candidates:

Gerso leads the stats with a goal and an assist but perhaps even more impressive, he had five fouls. It was perhaps the strongest he has played in a long time and maybe ever for Sporting KC. The speedy winger had an ‘expecting-a-baby’ celebration ready when he scored so he gets some style points there as well. He also made the CCL team of the week.

Nemeth also had a strong performance. He scored, came close a couple times and combined well with the rest of the team.

Ilie played his normal high level of defensive mid but he also scored his first goal for Sporting KC from the run of play. Last year he took most of the penalty kicks and started taking a few shots that were mostly close. This year he is at the top of the goal scoring list (for now).

Seth Sinovic was up and down the wing and adding to the attack like few thought he could. Competition brings out the best in Seth.

Andreu Fontas was impressive with his passing and he partnered well with Besler.

Truthfully I could say something good about each of the starters. Not to knock on the guys off the bench but they did not make a lot of impact in their limited time on the field.

Who should be the Man of the Match in game that was good all around? A goal scorer? Someone that did not show up in the scoring line? Or maybe manager Peter Vermes?
