FC Bayern Munich will face AC Milan at Arrowhead on July 23rd as part of the International Champions Cup. This year’s tournament will have 12 clubs playing 18 matches across the United States, Europe and Asia. This is the seventh edition of the ICC. Tottenham is the defending champions.
Arrowhead has hosted several international friendlies and is best known as the former home of the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City). It is also the home of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kansas City is bidding to be one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup and matches would be played at Arrowhead with some required modifications.
These two teams faced each other in Chicago in the 2016 version of the ICC. The two European powers were level at 3-3 with Milan taking it in penalties (5-3) in front of 44,826 spectators.
This year, the German side is competing for the top spot in the Bundesliga while AC Milan is probably battling for the third place in Serie A.
Here’s the full list of clubs playing in the 2019 ICC:
• AC Milan
• FC Bayern
• Atletico Madrid
• AS Roma
• Chivas de Guadalajara
Some teams will only play in the United States and others will be exclusively overseas. Predictions that Juventus would not play in the U.S. came true. Possibly because of legal trouble waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo stemming from a sexual-assault accusation in Nevada.
Chivas is the only non-European team in this year’s version of the ICC.
Will those two teams draw well in Kansas City?
While there is no guarantee which players will play in these types of tournaments or even what players will be on the roster at that time, Bayern is fairly well star-studded across the roster. AC Milan may not have the same number of big names but they will have their own stars on the field and a number of fans in America.
For comparison sake, our resident stats geek Mike Kuhn pulled these attendance numbers from last year.
