Update 1/22/20: It would appear the game on February 12th that was previously TBD will be against the Columbus Crew. We’ll wait for official confirmation from Sporting KC before updating the story.
On Tuesday, Sporting Kansas City confirmed the remainder of their preseason schedule. The team will play six games, with five of the opponents already announced. Currently, Sporting KC are slated to face three MLS teams, Phoenix Rising FC and a team of PRFC trialists.
That is a notable step up in competition from last year where SKC only played one MLS team, the Houston Dynamo. Sporting were undefeated in the 2019 preseason with the only draw coming from the backups playing Houston in a simultaneous game as the starters were routing the Dynamo. Sporting KC are set to arrive in Scottsdale, Arizona on this coming Sunday, January 19th. The first leg of preseason will last until Saturday, February 1st. In that time they’ll play two games. First against the aforementioned Phoenix Rising FC trailists (who they walloped 7-0 last year). Then they’ll face FC Cincinnati, 2019 MLS debutantes who SKC have only played once.
KC will return home for a week after the first leg before returning to Arizona from Saturday, February 8th to Sunday, February 23rd (Peter Vermes mentioned they may have some new signings in that time too). In that stretch of games they’ll face hated rival Real Salt Lake, Phoenix Rising (the USL Supporter Shield winners) and the New York Red Bulls. A fourth opponent is yet to be announced.
The final three games (RSL, PRFC, RBNY) are all a part of the Visit Tucson Sun Cup (formerly the Mobile Mini Sun Cup and formerly the Desert Diamond Cup). Sporting KC have been competing in that preseason tournament since it’s inception. Those games are open to the public and tickets can be purchased through FCTucson.com.
The Blue Testament will bring as much coverage as possible and more information as it becomes available as we are often some of the only media present at preseason. In past seasons, games played in the Kino North Stadium in Tucson were broadcast online. There is no word of what will or won’t be show in 2020. Phoenix Rising broadcasts all their regular season games on ESPN+, but in the preseason that hasn’t been the case.
Below is the full schedule.
