Just when it felt like the offseason was over, Sporting Kansas City went out and made a signing. The club announced today they have signed Winston Reid on loan from West Ham United. The length of the loan isn’t listed. We reached out to Sporting KC and they confirmed they are honoring West Ham United’s request to not disclose the terms of the loan (West Ham’s story also makes no mention of loan length).
Reid’s arrival will mean Sporting will use up another international roster spot. That will mark the fourth international spot tied up by a center back (Roberto Puncec, Andreu Fontas, Botond Barath) and the fifth by a defender (Luis Martins). Reid will officially use up the final international roster spot that the team acquired in the Adrian Zendejas trade with Nashville SC.
Reid, 31, has struggled with injuries having not made a first team appearance for West Ham since March 3, 2018. He recently got some time with the second team though as he returned from injury.
We have more on Reid in the original rumor from January 26th. At that time it was rumored both Nashville SC and Sporting KC were interested in Reid. Later it sounded as though Reid was loaned to Nashville though that fell through.
We’ll bring you more on this signing as it becomes available.
This move could open the door for SKC to buy out Andreu Fontas by the February 28th deadline. If they don’t, this would appear to be a low risk move since it’s a loan of undetermined length that seems likely to run only until the summer or possible the end of 2020.
