Across State Lines: Feilhaber Retires

New, 5 comments

An update on former Kansas City players including Erik Palmer-Brown getting a United States U-23 call up.

MLS: San Jose Earthquakes at Sporting Kansas City Peter G. Aiken

Benny Feilhaber is well remembered in Kansas City for his contributions to Sporting Kansas City over his six seasons with the club, today the 35 year old former US national team player called time on his career in a post on Twitter.

Feilhaber had been without a club since Sporting declined his contract option at the end of the 2019 season. Feilhaber will likely end up as a Sporting Legend some day for his contributions to the club, he’s seventh all time in goals in league play (31) and in all competitions (35), fourth in league assists (43), third in all competitions (58). He’s also somewhere between 11th and 13th all time in games played (167 league, 198 all competitions), minutes played (13,048 league, 15,560 all competitions) and starts (147 league, 175 all competitions).

There was also his 2015 season where he was a finalist for the league’s MVP award finishing with 10 goals and 15 assists that year. He came to Kansas City with questions about his attitude, but became a fan favorite and an indispensable part of KC’s 2013 MLS Cup run assisting on series winning goals against the New England Revolution and Houston Dynamo as well as their runs to the 2015 and 2017 US Open Cup championship. Congratulations to Feilhaber on a fantastic career.

In other former player news, former Sporting homegrown player, Erik Palmer-Brown was named this week to the US U23 team for Olympic qualifying. The tournament that will see the US play Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico starts on March 20th. Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
