Johnny Russell isn’t going anywhere. He has said over and over he loves Sporting Kansas City and maybe the only team he’d consider leaving for is his boyhood club, Celtic. Add one more team to that list according to an interview with BBC. Dundee United.
“I wouldn’t say I have got a desire to come back – I love it where I am [in Kansas City] – but I would never turn my nose up to come back and play in Scotland,” said Russell.
He continued, when speaking of Dundee United, “I had a great relationship with the fans - hopefully at some point I will maybe get the chance to get myself there.”
Of course Russell started as a professional for Dundee United, so it’s not uncommon to consider maybe ending a career where it started. Or just politely leaving the door open. Russell is only 30-years-old right now, so retirement should be no where near his immediate future. He’s one of the stars of the 2020 Sporting KC team which currently sits in first place in the whole league*.
But right now he seems perfectly content in Kansas City. He even felt the need to defend Major League Soccer.
“I said at the time that I felt it was the right decision,” started Russell. “I think it has proved that way so far. A lot of people still have their opinion of the league [MLS] but I think that is not really based on much knowledge.”
Back before the 2019 season, Russell detailed how he nearly went to Celtic at one point in his career and then there was very loose rumors tying him to Celtic by a blog using that information plus him giving an interview about being homesick. I personally remember reporting on that story and getting a sick feeling in my stomach based on the reaction because the headline (which can be misleading due to a character limit) wasn’t 100% clear. It’s since been cleaned up.
